Your Education Visit: What to Know!
Often, education services look like play! Play and interactions around their interests are how young children learn best, and we will join your child in anything that is fun or exciting to them. There is no need to have special toys or supplies – we can use anything you already have in your home that your child is interested in. At the end of the visit, we may identify goals for the next visit or talk about ways that you can support your child at home in making progress towards their goals.
What is Parent Coaching?
Parent coaching is one of the main service models we use at Boyer. This just means that we want to work with you to find strategies and supports that can be successful for you to use independently with your child, not just when we are with you! We might do this by demonstrating different ways to play with or talk to your child, talking with you about a challenging routine, and providing information about your child’s learning style and development. The goal of our services is that you learn new tools that you can use to care for your child!
Tips for a Successful Visit
- Schedule the visit for a time that your child will be awake.
- Attempt to limit distractions (example: turn off screens if you are able)
- Make sure a caregiver is able to join the entire session.
- Let your therapy team know if you have any questions about using the strategies on your own.
Why are you coming with another provider?
Sometimes, kids are assigned multiple service providers to support multiple areas of development. In addition to an educator, your child might be assigned an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, or a speech pathologist. Sometimes, kids get the best supports when we can do visits together and work as a team to support your child.
